History: The Nigerian Army Welfare Insurance Scheme (NAWIS) is one of the NA's welfare schemes established to meet the yearnings and aspirations of NA personnel. It is a registered Limited By Guarantee Company under the Companies and Allied Matters Decree 1990. The scheme commenced operations in January 1988. It was established with the aim of providing immediate succour to all NA personnel and their families on event of death, retirement or discharge from active service.

Structure: The Scheme operates side by side with the Benevolent Fund (Benfund) and the management is headed by the Managing Director. The Chairman of the Board of Directors (BOD) of NAWIS is the Group Managing Director (GMD), Nigerian Army Welfare Limited By /Guarantee (NAWLG). The Board makes policies and guidelines for implementation by the management of NAWIS.

Objectives: The goals and objectives of the scheme are as follows:

  • I. Improving existing welfare services in the NA and including reduction of the suffering of officers and soldiers and their dependants.
  • II. Motivating service personnel in the discharge of their duties.
  • III. Safeguarding NA personnel from risk, hazards and uncertainties during military service.
  • IV. Raising the morale of officers and soldiers thereby enhancing 'Es-spirit-de-Corps.
  • V. Providing insurance cover for all occupational hazards associated with military duties including war risks and riot which are not usually covered by conventional insurance policies.
